Architectural Significance

The 6th Street Bridge, also known as the Sixth Street Viaduct, has been an iconic landmark in Los Angeles for decades. The original 1932 structure was replaced in 2022 with a new design, dubbed “The Ribbon of Light”. This transformation provides photographers with the opportunity to document:

  • The bridge’s striking architectural features, including its 10 pairs of magnificent arches
  • The interplay of light and shadow on the structure, especially at different times of day
  • The bridge’s integration into the urban landscape, connecting the Arts District and Boyle Heights

Cultural Impact

As a vital connection between neighborhoods, the bridge serves as more than just infrastructure:
It’s a gathering place for community events and celebrations
The bridge has become a canvas for creative expression, with people bringing masks, bubbles, cars, models, and even snakes for photoshoots
Its iconic status has made it a popular location for films, shows, and music videos

Various project views

As we began to plan out the implementation details, and started to make design decisions, it became clear that changes would need to be made to the architecture defined in the previous assessment. At the start of the assessment, we scoped out which requirements and features we wanted to implement by the assessment deadline. We used the assessment brief provided to us and and took into account the amount of time we had until the assessment deadline to determine how far we wanted to take the project and what features we wanted to implement.
